The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) announced that the 2020 Les Grube Memorial Design Award has been presented to Urban Green Design, LTD and installing contractor Sentry Fence, Inc. for their exceptional work on the Midwest Development Project for medical marijuana researcher and producer Galenas, Inc. in Akron, Ohio.
This unique project featured two 20-foot-tall, 1-inch mesh aluminized fabric chain link structures strategically attached to the building. On one wall, the structure leans outward, while on another wall, it leans inward—both at precise 13-degree angles. The design also included an 8-foot-high aluminized 1-inch mesh fence surrounding the parking lot, as well as the towering 20-foot-high chain link panels on the building’s north and south sides. The north side fence mirrored the 13-degree lean, but with the top tilting toward the building. Each side measured approximately 80 feet in length, making these fences integral elements of the building’s architectural exterior rather than stand-alone enclosures.
Constructing a 20-foot-tall chain link structure deliberately leaning at such a dramatic angle posed significant engineering and installation challenges for Sentry Fence. Constraints included the building’s footprint, strict property line limits, and precise fence positioning. On the south side, for example, the fence’s anchor point at the bottom was set 8 feet from the property line, yet the top extended so far outward that it came within just one inch of the property boundary—directly above an existing barbed wire fence.
Adding to the complexity, construction began during the coldest part of January, requiring crews to work in harsh winter conditions. The finished design not only delivers robust security for the Galenas facility but also achieves the client’s vision of a visually striking, architecturally integrated feature.
All chain link materials were supplied and delivered to the project site by Richard’s Fence Company, Inc., Akron, OH. Learn more at www.richardsfence.com.
